Stepping Together – Community Services for Latino Seniors
Caminando Juntos - Servicios de la Comunidad para Personas Latinas de la Tercera Edad

Caminando Juntos provides bilingual/bicultural mental health treatment and support services to Spanish-speaking older adults. Support services include referrals to other community agencies for assistance with housing, home care, financial and legal matters, nursing homes and assisted living facilities, employment and immigration, as well as information, support and advocacy to family caregivers caring for an ill relative.

Caminando Juntos serves older adults by providing social and emotional supports necessary for coping with the trauma of change, natural anxieties about aging, disability, illness, grief, and with difficulties or conflicts experienced in family, social, or peer relationships.

For all Spanish language materials available on this site, read our Lista de Articulos y Servicios en Español (Directory of Spanish Language Articles and Services) in our Educational Services section.

Is It For Me?

The aging process makes demands on older adults emotionally, socially, physically and economically. The following list of questions may help you decide whether you or your loved one could use Caminando Juntos services.

  • Are every day activities becoming too difficult to handle?
  • Are you unable to do the things you used to do?
  • Are you feeling isolated, sad or lonely?
  • Are you uninterested in activities that you looked forward to in the past?
  • Are you having trouble sleeping or sleep too much of the time?
  • Do you worry too much or are you fearful in ways that make it difficult to do the things you have to do?
  • Have you lost your appetite or find you are eating too much?
  • Do you feel exhausted and overwhelmed by the demands of caring for an ill relative or friend?
  • Are you having difficulty coping with the death of family and friends or with major life changes such as retirement or moving from your home?

If you answer yes to any of these questions, our trained bilingual staff is available to consult with you and assist you with your needs. We will meet with you in the privacy of your home, or you are welcome to come to our offices.

What We Deliver

Supportive Counseling/Information and Referral Services

Older adults often experience many social, emotional, physical and financial changes, leaving them feeling overwhelmed with new decisions they must make and with locating appropriate resources that can successfully facilitate those changes.

Our staff can help you find new resources and solutions to problems. We can provide information on housing, day care, home care, insurance and financial matters and much more.

Individual Psychotherapy

Our bilingual staff is available to listen and assist you in sorting out your feelings and concerns. We can provide assistance for depression, anxiety, loneliness, grief, family conflicts, or adjustment to major life changes or a loved one’s illness.

You can meet individually with a bilingual/bicultural therapist for psychotherapy treatment. During treatment, you and your therapist will identify your problems and goals, and work towards finding resolutions and achieving your goals.

Bilingual psychiatrists are available to assist with medication management if needed. Psychiatrists are medical doctors especially trained to work with psychological and behavioral difficulties. For a further description of the therapy process, please see the section entitled What to Expect from Mental Health Treatment.

Caregiver Support

If you are taking care of an ill relative or a friend, chances are you don’t have a lot of time to care for your own needs. You may be feeling overwhelmed or all alone.

We provide bilingual assistance with information and referrals to community resources, which will help you care for your loved one, and we will stay with you through the process providing support and counseling as needed.
