Family Abuse Court Service Volunteers

Family violence and abuse hurts families and children. It harms us all by destroying our social fabric and well being. In Westchester County 5,000 women are battered and 4,500 children are physically or sexually abused each year.

Family Abuse Court Service volunteers help victims of family abuse negotiate the court system to find relief from the violence they are experiencing.

Is It For Me?

If you have a strong desire to help victims of family abuse, can establish relationships easily with a wide range of people, can remain calm in crisis situations, can commit to one day a week and 14 hours of initial training, this may be the right opportunity for you.

To learn more about Family Abuse Court Services, call Kelly Darrow, Program Director, at 914-345-5900, extension 233, or our Information and Referral Services at 914-345-5900, extension 240 or e-mail help@mhawestchester.org.

What We Deliver

Volunteers are provided with a minimum of 14 hours of training. The program coordinator, supervisors and experts from a variety of disciplines; i.e. lawyers, judges, clinicians, law enforcement and advocates participate in the training. Volunteers are assigned one day per week at the White Plains, New Rochelle or Yonkers Family Court. Volunteers are available to any individual coming to Family Court seeking relief from the violence they are experiencing in their home. Volunteers may provide any or all of the following services:

  • Explain the court process and discuss options
  • Provide emotional support
  • Accompany clients to court as non-witness friends
  • Assist with referrals to shelters, process servers, medical services, counseling, resources for financial assistance, legal services, crime victim’s compensation, lock replacement and many other community resources
