Diagnostic Vocational Evaluation (DVE)

The Diagnostic Vocational Evaluation (DVE) is a fifteen-day program designed to assist you with the following goals:

  • Assessing your readiness for rehabilitation and vocational goal setting
  • Determining vocational interests, skills and values
  • Guiding you in vocational exploration
  • Choosing, obtaining and keeping employment

Is It For Me?

If you are:

  • A consumer of mental health services
  • 18 years of age or older
  • A Westchester County resident
  • Legally entitled to work in the USA
  • Considering entering the workforce, upgrading your current employment, looking for new emloyment possibilities or need assistance with discovering what issues have prevented success in the workplace
then the DVE may be for you.

What We Deliver

MHA's DVE is a seven-day work readiness assessment that consists of workshops that assist in measuring your skills in the following areas:

  • Basic work habits and behaviors
  • Work attitudes and values
  • Interpersonal relations skills
  • Personal and environmental coping skills

The evaluation assists participants with:

  • Identifying the changes that work brings to one's life
  • Identifying the specifics that you want at the workplace
  • Identifying personal strengths, deficits, environmental constraints and possible mismatches with the workplace specifics
  • Learning techniques to manage symptoms and medications at the workplace
  • Improving interactions with supervisors and peers
  • Developing socialization skills with co-workers
  • Identifying and recruiting sources of support in and out of the workplace

When

The DVE is held approximately every other month. Services are available in English and Spanish.

Cost

There is no charge for services. The New York State Office of Mental Health, the Westchester Department of Community Mental Health and the New York State Education Department VESID (Vocational and Educational Services for Individuals with Disabilities) provide funds so consumers of mental health services can have access to the DVE.

Staff/Service Providers

Employment Services staff members are chosen for their ability to develop relationships with employers and program participants. Employment Services staff members come from a variety of backgrounds, both in and out of the human services field. Most Employment Services staff have had jobs in the private sector or are involved in their local communities, so they have access to job opportunities, possible contacts and hiring practices.

Employment Services staff members have:

  • Experience in teaching or training others
  • An awareness of how mental health issues may impact work performance or relationships with peers and supervisors
  • A history of reliability, adaptability, and problem solving skills
  • Specific training in supported employment techniques
  • Values and philosophy that support the inclusion of consumers of mental health in the community
  • Successful work experiences related to business and industrial settings in which placements will occur

Employment Services is staffed with a Director who holds a master's degree in Rehabilitation Counseling, a Program Director, Employment Specialists, a Peer Specialist and a Mental Health Professional.
