As Domestic Violence Awareness Month Approaches, Family Abuse Court Advocacy Program Seeks Volunteers

Westchester County, NY, August 3, 2007 – As Domestic Violence Awareness Month (October) nears, a local advocacy program is looking to expand support for families that suffer from domestic violence. The Mental Health Association of Westchester’s (MHA) Family Abuse Court Services (FACS) is looking for volunteers to assist families who seek relief though the Family Courts system. The FACS program operates on-site at all three Family Courts in Westchester County: Yonkers, White Plains, and New Rochelle.

Living with domestic violence is a devastating experience. Finding both the courage and resources to escape it and move on to a safe and healthy life can present a tremendous challenge.

The FACS program assists survivors of family abuse to cope with the fears, confusions, and frustration that they may experience while seeking court services to protect them and their families. FACS volunteers help families navigate the complex court process, discuss their options, and provide emotional support. They also help families find needed services such as legal and financial assistance, shelters and counseling. MHA of Westchester equips its volunteers with training and provides ongoing support.

“The FACS program relies on community support to provide hope to thousands of women and families,” says Blanche Goodman, the program’s director. “People are often surprised to realize just how great an impact they can have on these families’ lives. We hope that Domestic Violence Awareness Month jump starts year round attention and advocacy for this cause.”

Volunteers must be available one day per week for a one year commitment. Anyone interested in becoming a FACS volunteer should contact Blanche Goodman at 914-345-5900, ext. 245. Anyone who is a victim, witness or perpetrator of abuse, can call MHA’s Family Abuse Services Hotline (914-347-4558), which it operates with the Northern Westchester Shelter.

The Mental Health Association of Westchester (MHA) is the leading resource for mental health services in Westchester County. Through its advocacy, education, and direct services, MHA meets a broad spectrum of needs for thousands of children, adults and families each year. MHA’s educational website, www.mhawestchester.org, provides information on mental health and wellness, mental illnesses, treatment, and services in Westchester and Putnam Counties.
