Volunteers Needed to Advocate for Seniors in Long Term Care Facilities

Westchester County, August 20, 2007 – The Mental Health Association of Westchester (MHA) is offering an opportunity to make a true difference in the lives of seniors. MHA’s New York State Long Term Care Ombudsman Program (LTCOP) is seeking volunteer Ombudsmen to advocate for residents in licensed long-term care facilities, including nursing and adult homes in Westchester County. Volunteer Ombudsmen help to resolve complaints, monitor quality of life and preserve the dignity of residents in these facilities.

Volunteers must complete a 36-hour training to become New York State Certified Ombudsmen. In this free training, a faculty of experts covers a wide range of subjects to prepare volunteers for their role. These topics include understanding the aging process, regulations, levels of care, and how-to skills of working and negotiating with staff for the protection of residents’ rights as prescribed by law.

The next LTCOP training will be held in October. Please call for an interview as soon as possible to be eligible for the upcoming training. Contact: Margaret Hadad at (914) 345-3993 Ext. 234.

The Mental Health Association of Westchester (MHA) is the leading resource for mental health services in Westchester County.
