The Mental Health Associations of Nassau, New York City and Westchester
Policy Priorities for 2007
The Mental Health Associations of Nassau, New York City, and Westchester believe that
New York State should develop a comprehensive, community-based mental health
system that meets the mental health needs of all New Yorkers. Such a comprehensive
system can only be developed incrementally. For 2007, our priorities are:
- Funding to cover inflationary costs of all community mental health services, to
stop the erosion of community support programs, and to continue the progressive
development of a comprehensive community mental health system.
- Adequate funding to maintain current housing programs and to expand housing
by 4000 units per year for the next 10 years and passage of wait list bill.
- Continued expansion and improvement of community-based mental health
services for children and adolescents.
- Increased funding for basic geriatric mental health services, for innovative
demonstration programs, and for the development of a geriatric mental health
training center.
- Protect mental health service capacity currently provided by general hospitals.
- Protect access to psychiatric medications.
- Improved mental health benefits in the workplace including parity of mental
health and health insurance coverage.
- Suicide prevention.
