Our Treatment Services for Adults

People often seek mental health treatment when they are experiencing very stressful feelings or behaviors and are having difficulty coping with them. Others come to therapy on the advice of a doctor, spouse, lawyer or employer. Our clinics in Elmsford, Mount Kisco and White Plains offer a variety of treatment services for adults.

Is It For Me?

Consider the followings situations. If some of them apply to you or a loved one, therapy may be of help.

  • You feel very sad or depressed over a period of time
  • You have thoughts of hurting yourself or others
  • You worry or are fearful in ways that interfere with your life
  • You have difficulty managing angry, aggressive feelings
  • You feel uninterested in activities that you looked forward to in the past
  • You are stressed by a chronic illness - your own or a loved one, especially if you are the caregiver
  • You are having difficulty coping with the death of a loved one
  • You have suffered a trauma, such as rape, abuse or accident
  • You are having difficulty coping with a recent major life change (such as divorce or birth of a child)
  • You are having trouble sleeping or are sleeping too much for no obvious reasons
  • You have no appetite or are eating too much for no obvious reasons
  • You have recently developed great difficulty in paying attention or concentrating
  • You have a past history of mental illness
  • You feel that you need therapy to deal with stress in your life related to your relationships with others, your job or caring for your children
  • You have been hearing or seeing things that do not exist
  • You have difficulty effectively expressing feelings
  • You have beliefs that seem false to others or have ideas that are not real
  • You feel that your thinking is disorganized

If you have any of these symptoms as a result of medication or a medical condition, please be sure to discuss them with your doctor. They may be side effects of medications that will diminish over time, or they may need to be addressed.

What We Deliver

Our clinics are licensed by the New York State Office of Mental Health and provide individual, family and group therapy for adults. Medication therapy may be a part of any of these treatments. Specialized treatment is available for adults with depression, anxiety, trauma histories and more serious mental illnesses.

Individual Psychotherapy For Adults
Individual treatment is a one-to-one meeting with a therapist in which problems and goals identified by you and your therapist are addressed. An individual session typically lasts from 45-60 minutes. For a further description of the therapy process, please see the section entitled What To Expect From Mental Health Treatment.

Medication Therapy For Adults
A person meets with a psychiatrist to decide whether medication may be helpful in reducing stressful feelings or behaviors. A psychiatrist is a medical doctor specially trained to work with psychological and behavioral difficulties. For more information on medication therapy, please see the section entitled What To Expect From Mental Health Treatment.

Group Treatment For Adults
Group treatment is a way of addressing problems with others who share similar difficulties. A therapist leads the group discussion and makes sure that all group members have the opportunity to participate and learn in the group.

Our Clinics offer the following groups for adults based on community interest and/or demand:

Parenting Skills Group: Eight-week support and education group for parents interested in learning more about positive parenting techniques, child development, and receiving support from other parents. For more information, please see the section on Parenting Skills Groups.

Coping Skills Group: Drop-in group for Sterling Club members only. This group focuses on the prevention of mental illness relapse.

AWARE: Support and educational group for women who are or have been in abusive relationships. This is an ongoing group which meets weekly for an hour and a half. For more information, please see the section on services relating to family violence.

WAVE (Workshop for Anti-Violence Education) Educational Group: Weekly education group for men who have been abusive towards a female partner. These groups clarify the law as it relates to violent behavior, teach constructive ways to relate to intimate partners and to manage anger. There are several WAVE groups which meet at different times both during the day and in the evenings. There are also Spanish-language WAVE groups. Please see section on WAVE for further information about meeting days and times.

Family Treatment For Adults
Family treatment looks at problems and solutions from a family point of view. In this treatment, a therapist works with family members together to explore and practice how family members can work together to meet each other’s needs and improve the way the family communicates and functions.

No one is denied treatment services at our clinics because he or she is unable to pay standard fees.

Staff/Service Providers

Our staff members who work with adults in our clinics and in home-based treatment are master's level certified clinical social workers (CSW’s), psychologists (PhD’s, PsyD’s), or medical doctors (MD’s) who are trained as psychiatrists.

Our clinics have internships for advanced graduate students training to be therapists. These students are supervised by senior clinic staff members. Some people coming to the clinic work with these students. Persons may choose not to work with a student if they prefer.
