The Hudson River Museum of Westchester

The museum has a contemporary art wing with modern exhibitions, the beautiful Victorian Glenview Mansion built in 1876 by John Bond Trevor and the Andrus Planetarium.

Katonah Museum of Art

The museum presents eight to ten different exhibitions a year in sculpture, painting, decorative arts, drawing, photography, prints-representing all areas of historical concern. The museum features two indoor galleries and a sculpture garden. Continuous array of fine programming for adults and children: workshops, films, lectures, concerts and special events.

Nueberger Museum of Art

The museum carries 20th century American and European art, African art and Greek pottery. Family events, gallery tours and special film, dance and lecture programs are offered year-round.

The Union Church of Pocantico Hills

This church features stained glass windows by Henri Matisse and Marc Chagall, commissioned by members of the Rockefeller family whose Kykuit Estate is nearby. The windows include the final work of Matisse, completed just two days before his death, and the only cycle of church windows created by Chagall in the United States.

All. This may not seem like an exciting place for little ones, but to see these beautiful original windows by Matisse and Chagall up close is an experience not to be missed

Bronx Museum of the Arts

This art museum features a good-sized collection of artwork in many styles. Exhibits change frequently and are often about themes of living in the city and immigration. The Bronx Museum also offers many classes for children in such subjects as film production, animation and drawing.

Price:

$5 for adults, $3 for students and senior citizens, children under 12 are free. Free on Fridays. Children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult. (Occasionally the museum has special family days when an adult and child together are admitted free of charge.)

Wave Hill - The Bronx

Today, as one of 34 New York City-owned cultural institutions, Wave Hill provides an oasis of serenity and offers programs in Horticulture, Environmental Education, Land Management, Landscape History and the Visual, Performing and Literary Arts. Through the arts and sciences, Wave Hill seeks to foster connections between people and nature. Of special interest to families and children is the Family Art Project that meets every Saturday and Sunday.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art - Manhattan

There’s so much at the Met that you could never see everything. Check out the first floor for kid-friendly exhibits like the Egyptian Wing (including the Temple of Dendur), the Arms and Armor Collection, and in the winter, the Christmas Tree. Musical Instruments on the second floor and Fashion and Costumes on the lower level are also worth a visit. Make sure to get a map on your way in and ask at the information desk for copies of the treasure hunts for kids (they’re ideal for children 8-10).

Suggested admission is $20 for adults, $15 for seniors, $10 for students. Admission fee includes the building and the Cloisters on the same day. Children 12 and under are admitted free with an adult.

There's enough to see to spend a whole day, but a half day is probably a better idea.

The Cloisters - Manhattan

This branch of the Met is a compilation of re-built medieval monasteries and gardens filled with medieval art, including the beautiful unicorn tapestries. If the weather is nice, you will be allowed to walk along the parapets. At the Cloisters, you not only feel like you’ve left New York, you almost feel like you’ve left the country.

All. (However, the Cloisters is a pretty sedate place, and older children may enjoy it more than younger.)

Price:

Suggested voluntary donation of $20 for adults, $15 for seniors (65+), $10 for students. Children under 12 are free and must be accompanied by an adult.
