Activities with Children - Parks and RecreationMuscoot FarmsThe farm is 777 acres and houses a variety of animals on a late 1920’s dairy farm. The animals are available for viewing, not petting. Through active participation, kids learn about the care and maintenance of domestic farm animals and crops. Farm buildings dating from 1880’s-1920’s and antique farming equipment are on display. In addition, there are nature trails to explore.
Greenburgh Nature CenterThis 33 acre nature preserve features a 21-room manor house. It includes a live animal museum, hands-on nature exhibits, exhibits of nature-inspired arts and a working greenhouse with botanical exhibits.
Franklin D. Roosevelt State ParkThis 1,000 acre day-use park features the largest pool in New York State, boating, fishing, picnic areas, ball fields, hiking and cross-country skiing.
Teatown Lake ReservationThe community nature center offers 600 unspoiled acres with twelve miles of hiking trails. A 1917 English Tudor carriage house holds natural history exhibits. Throughout the year there are programs and special events at the education center and nature preserve for children, adults and families.
Van Cortlandt Park - BronxThere’s always something fun to do at Van Cortlandt. Running and hiking paths abound and there are baseball diamonds, basketball courts and more. Sometimes you’ll see teams from Manhattan College, Fordham, and local high school practicing, and in the fall, many cross-country running meets are held in the park. For a nice long walk, try the high school cross-country course; it’s pretty and just over two miles long.
Yankee Stadium - BronxWell, it’s where the Yankees play. That’s exciting enough for a baseball fan. Try to see a game and call for the special game schedule. Yankee stadium has lots of giveaways like “Bat Day”, “Hat Day” and others where children 12 and under receive gifts. This is an activity that will be remembered.
Shea Stadium - QueensTake them out to the ball game, take them out to the crowd. Buy them peanuts and cracker jacks, they won’t care if they never come back. See the Mets play! Baseball games are great fun for kids. Try to arrive early enough to watch the players practice. If you bring a ball and a pen and get down close enough to the field, you might be able to get some autographs!
