Internet Acceptable Use Policies at School

Many school districts have developed Acceptable Use Policies (AUP)s. These policies state the expectations and rules of Internet use in the school. The AUP is usually signed by students and their parents or guardians and describes the following:

  • What the Internet is
  • Its benefits and risks
  • What is and is not accepted use in the school
  • Access and restrictions which students have in school
  • Students’ responsibility not to look for inappropriate material
  • Students’ responsibility if they accidentally come across inappropriate material
  • Consequences of violating these rules

Sample AUPs and a discussion of Internet safety at school and at home can be found in the book Child Safety on the Internet (l997) written by the staff of Classroom Connect; published by Classroom Connect, Lancaster Pa. and Prentice Hall, Inc. Although this book is no longer in print, it may be available in your local or school library.

You may also use your favorite Internet search engine to find online examples of Acceptable Use Practices. Typing the following in the “search box” is likely to yield many examples:

“Internet” and “school” and “acceptable use practice”
