Parent Tip of the Week: Preventing Unwanted Behavior
At some point you will probably face unpleasant situations caused by your child’s
unwanted behavior. Whether he or she disobeys you or causes a scene in public, read on
to learn how to prevent such behavior.
Here are eight simple suggestions that may help you to prevent your child’s challenging
behaviors:
- Children need to feel loved and cared for. The next time your child does
something that you like, recognize this behavior with kind words, hugs and
kisses.
- We often forget that children like to explore their surroundings. They touch and
play with things that they see and find. Remove from your child’s reach things
that are not for children or are dangerous.
- Children are easily entertained. Always have toys and fun things at home, in the
car, in your bag, and when you travel.
- Children require a lot of care. Think of your children’s needs when you plan
things to do with them.
- Don’t expect your children to know how to behave in every possible situation.
Recognize that they are children and won’t act like adults in most situations.
- If you know that certain things upset your child try to avoid situations that cause
these negative behaviors.
- Use everyday situations to remind children of your rules. Repeat your rules and
remember to always be patient.
- Teach children behaviors and skills that are expected at their age. Don’t expect
your child to be an adult.
