Parent Tip of the Week: Healthy TV Viewing
Children learn by watching those around them, including media figures. Set an example
for your young ones when it comes to healthy TV-watching habits. You can, for instance,
pick certain programs or change the channel when you feel the program is not age-
appropriate. Read on for more useful tips to promote healthy TV viewing:
- Don’t watch inappropriate, violent TV shows when your children are present.
Pick a time when your child is either sleeping or not around to watch these
programs.
- If a program becomes violent, tell your child, “I am not watching this program—it
is too violent,” or “I don’t like to watch people hurting each other even when it is
pretend.” Then turn off the TV or change the channel to a nonviolent program.
- Don’t keep the TV on all the time. Turn off the TV during dinnertime.
- Schedule limited TV viewing hours for yourself.
There are many other fun alternatives besides TV that your child can enjoy and benefit
from. Play and read books, draw, do puzzles, sing or listen to music with your children.
