Parent Tip of the Week - Effective Discipline

Effective discipline teaches children positive behaviors at any age. Here we offer useful tips for dealing with young children:

  • Be realistic and expect a child to act like a child.

  • Choose a few, simple, important rules for behaviors. These can include setting specific bedtimes or requiring that all homework be done before your child can play. Explain these rules repeatedly to your child.

  • Use a few clear words to explain how you want your child to behave. Simple words and simple reason is all that your child needs to hear from you.

  • Promote self-control by showing how you can control your own anger. Show your child how you find ways to relax and deal with conflict and stress. Explain to your child how important it is to manage anger in a healthy way.

  • Use words—not violence—to discipline your child. Violence can have serious psychological, emotional and physical effects on a child, and is never an effective way to get a point across.

  • Reward wanted behavior and take away some of your child’s privileges as a way of correcting unwanted behavior.

  • Don’t put your child down when he or she misbehaves. Some words hurt and can have a serious effect on your child. Love and respect are the most effective ways to discipline your child.
