Parent Tip of the Week: TV and Obesity
Besides the obvious harms of media on your child, all the time your child spends in front
of the TV can also lead to various health problems like obesity. Here are a few tips to
help your children stay healthy.
- Like many adults, children love to snack while watching TV. Sometimes,
however, that means eating junk food. Instead, try apple slices, cheese, carrots, or
peanut butter and crackers, which are all healthier choices that you and your
family can enjoy.
- Children want things they see on TV, which is something that many companies
take advantage of when they advertise their products. Resist junk food advertised
on TV. Keep in mind that foods such as candy, potato chips, cookies and even
some breakfast cereals are low in nutritional value and contain a lot of sugar.
- Eat together as a family without the TV. This is a great way to catch up with your
family and strengthen your family bond.
- Turn the TV off and go for a walk or play catch. Or put on an exercise DVD or
tape that’s suitable for the whole family.
