Parent Tip of the Week: Handling Conflict

Kids learn by example, so the way parents handle a conflict will reflect on the way their children handle their own conflicts. Read on to find out some simple ways you can successfully and positively resolve an argument.

  • When faced with an argument, it is important to be able to keep to the issue at hand. Focus on the behavior that is causing the difficulty. Avoid opening old wounds and learn to forgive.

  • Try to find something positive to say along with expressing the feeling about what makes you angry. For example, you can use phrases like “Don’t get me wrong I really love you, but when you did…it made me really upset because…”

  • Use kindness in your responses and avoid using sarcasm and put-downs.

  • Resolve the situation while maintaining your own self-respect and respect for others. Screaming and cursing are not effective ways to handle a conflict.

Arguments happen…but if you try to use some of these tips they will end on a more positive note.
