Parent Tip of the Week: Take a Break From the Media
Compared to previous generations, today’s children are overloaded with information.
Whether it is online, on TV, or on the radio, children are exposed to dangerous and
inappropriate media on a daily basis. There are, however, plenty of activities for kids to
do with their families to help them escape from the media.
- Encourage your child to read. A good way to introduce books to your child is by taking
a trip to your local library.
- Take your child to a community-sponsored activity. For instance, find out when
the next time your local library is holding a story reading or puppet show.
- Children love to spend time with their parents. Designate one or a few nights per
week for a family game night. Play board games and cards.
- Read books and tell stories together. Books on tape are also something you and
your child can enjoy together.
- Children love to do arts and crafts. Start a journal, scrapbook or a photo album.
These kinds of projects allow children to expand their creativity and imaginations.
- Have crayons, play dough, colored pencils and paper always available to your
children.
- Like adults, most children love listening to music. Sing songs, take children to
local musicals or invest in a piano, keyboard or other musical instruments.
- Go walking with your child. Nothing is more pleasant than a stroll through the
park on a nice day.
- Do a puzzle.
