May is Mental Health Month Theme, “Get Connected”

The theme of this year’s Mental Health Month is “Get Connected,” to emphasize the important role social connectedness plays in maintaining and protecting mental health and wellness. Research shows that social connectedness can reduce stress and promote overall health by providing a sense of belonging, self-worth and security.

Mental Health America recently commissioned a short survey to learn more about social connectedness in America and to help promote public education activities this May. The survey goals are to determine:

  1. Americans’ stress levels and their concern about it
  2. Whether they have people they can rely on for emotional support
  3. The characteristics of their relationships
  4. Whether respondents recognize their benefits for mental and overall health

Mental Health America suggests the following ways of creating connections that support mental health:

  • Get connected to family and friends to feel close and supported
  • Get connected to community to feel a sense of belonging and purpose
  • Get connected to professional help to feel better when you’re stressed and having trouble coping

Go to the "Get Connected page on the website of Mental Health America at http://www.mentalhealthamerica.net/go/may/ for materials and tools to learn more about the role of social connectedness in promoting and protecting mental health and to help spread the message of the importance of mental health and wellness during May is Mental Health Month.

The national office will promote the findings of the survey, as well as Mental Health Month activities, in press releases and targeted media outreach throughout the month of May.
